I conducted a good deal of research on treadmills before I settled on the Smooth 7.35. I compared the Smooth to several other brands before making the purchase. I was fairly apprehensive about purchasing the treadmill without actually running on it, but I felt as though it would be fairly close in quality to the Sole and Nordic Trac that I tried in person.

I really wanted a non-folding unit, but the cost was just a little over what I was willing to spend. I completed the order online and had confirmation in only a few minutes. The unit was shipped within a day or so, and arrived at my house within 1 week. Impressive since I had ordered on a Saturday, and the delivery company was happy to deliver on a Saturday. I purchased the unit during a "sale" and got free in room delivery. The delivery company was not really happy with bringing the unit to my basement but they did so with no problems.

The treadmill comes in one huge box. After I wrestled it out of the box, assembly started. The instructions in the manual are not great. The assembly instructions are okay, but the descriptions of the hardware is really bad. However, if you have any mechanical ability whatsoever, it really isn't that hard to figure it out. I had it assembled in less than 30 minutes working by myself. One tip for assembly. When you put the console on, it probably will not fit completely into place. The foam pads on the outside hand rails hit the supports, and it won't fit all the way down. Simply peel the foam back with a small pry bar or screwdriver and the console will drop down into place.Overall, the fit and finish of the treadmill is quite nice. I liked the steel upright supports.

The treadmill functions flawlessly. It is relatively quiet, has adequate shock absorption, and the incline works well. The treadmill is very, very stable. It is not quite like running on a huge commercial unit, but honestly it really isn't that far off. I really like the speed and incline adjustments on the side rails. Not something I thought I would care about, but I like them quite a bit. Speed changes are quick, much faster than the Sole. That was the primary reason I did not get a Sole treadmill. The speed changes are brutally slow. The belt is large and gives plenty of room to wander on the belt a little.

Here are my minor gripes. The console is not as nice as some of the other units. First, the console does not display pace. I just like to see it for some reason, but pace charts are all over the internet so it's not that big a deal. The console beeps every minute when you are on it. This is mildly annoying, but is generally covered by my music. The speakers are pretty weak. I use either headphones or a bluetooth speaker. The water bottle holders are interesting. Essentially you just lay your bottle down on the console. I was really concerned with this, but the bottles sit right there without moving a centimeter. Only thing is, you have to use a bottle with a sealed lid, which I would not necessarily do because I hate cleaning water bottles. The user interface on the console is not very good. When you are trying to set up a user profile, the data you are inputting is not labelled. Things like height and weight are self explanatory, but not all of the inputs are that simple. My largest complaint is that the programs are very poor. The programs only automatically adjust speed or incline, but not both. So if you try the "hill climb" program, your incline will adjust automatically based on your level, but your speed will stay at the bare minimum .6mph. What is the sense in having a preset program if I have to adjust the speed myself?

Overall, the console and user interface could be better, and some other brands beat Smooth in this area. However, these features were the least important to me. I was most concerned with the everything below the console, and Smooth does those parts right. The treadmills are backed by an excellent warranty as well.
